Using 'Solved' in a Search Query for Faster and Better Results

Some search queries simply generate too much results. If you are trying to find a solution to a bug in your Joomla template that is caused by Internet Explorer, searching for 'internet explorer bug joomla' will give you over 2 million results. Scanning the Google Analytics reports of ThemePartner the other day, I spotted a visitor that had a brilliant solution to this problem.

The query in the report started with the word 'solved'. Why is this brilliant you might ask? Well, on many forums (including the forum on joomla.org) it is common practice to add [SOLVED] to the title of your post once the issue has been resolved. Also, comments on blogs will often contain the word 'solved' once it describes a solution to a problem. For example, searching Google 'solved remove copyright footer joomla' will present you with fixes to on how to remove the Joomla! footer copyright (see: this topic for a thorough description on how to remove the copyright notice).

More advanced queries

Finding this query in the report led me to think about more ways to optimize a search query. Try prepending one of the following to your query for better results:

  • solved
  • fixed
  • solution
  • resolved
  • answer
  • tutorial
  • guide
  • best practice
  • optimal way

Additionally you might use the site: operator for even better search results. Example queries below:

  • site:stackoverflow.com fixed enable joomla ftp layer
  • site:forum.joomla.org solved activate sef url joomla seo
  • site:docs.joomla.org best practice joomla template overrides
